Episode 238: The Power of Identity in Democracy

In this episode L. Joy welcomes special guest Kat Calvin back to the front of the class. Kat is the founder and executive director of Spread The Vote + Project ID and the cofounder and CEO of the Project ID Action Fund.

Kat Calvin is the author of "American Identity Crisis: Notes from an Accidental Activist," where she shares her experience at the front line of social activism in America, emphasizing the complexities of getting an ID in the U.S. and how social media has played an important role in her activism.

During the discussion, Kat highlighted the struggle many face when attempting to acquire an ID; many are unaware of the lengthy procedures and requirements. This prevents them from accessing basic amenities such as healthcare, jobs, and housing. Consequently, in some states, without an ID, many are left out of the democratic process unable to vote.

Our discussion brought into focus the importance of having an ID in exercising voting rights. Kat emphasized how having a valid ID is crucial for involvement in democracy and discussed the 'IDs for an Inclusive Democracy Act' in Congress. The act aims to establish a free and optional ID for all Americans over 14 years old, making it more accessible and taking the process away from the DMV. 

The discussion opened up on the relationship of policy-making in helping individuals get this document necessary for a healthy, successful life, and eventually, having a say in the country's governance.
