Episode 279: Focus on Local
L. Joy brings Virginia House Delegate Adele McClure to the front of the class. Delegate McClure represents Virginia’s 2nd district and is recognized as Emily’s List 2025 Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star. She speaks about why actively engaging in state and local politics is absolutely crucial. The laws and budgets passed at the state level influence a wide range of issues, from access to affordable childcare to ensuring public safety in communities. Adele shares how before running for office, she spent seven years as a legislative staffer, including serving as Executive Director of the state Black Caucus. That experience prepared her to navigate the legislature with confidence. Unlike many freshmen, she entered her first session ready with fifteen bills, most of which passed. Her background not only gave her policy expertise but also instilled a deep respect for staff as the next generation of leaders.
They start wrapping up by urging folks to check election calendars, meet with their representatives, attend hearings, and bring forward ideas. “You don’t have to be a lawyer to create change,” says Adele, sharing how legislation often begins with a simple story shared at a town hall.
